About ContractChecker
How it works
Is ContractChecker legal advice?
No. ContractChecker is an AI-powered analysis tool, not a law firm. We provide information to help you understand contracts — we do not provide legal advice. For high-stakes contracts, significant financial decisions, or legal disputes, always consult a qualified solicitor or lawyer.
What types of contracts can you analyse?
Any English-language contract from any country. Employment contracts, tenancy agreements, freelance contracts, NDAs, supplier agreements, commercial contracts, settlement agreements, software licences, and more. Our AI is trained on contract law from the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Ireland, New Zealand, and other common law jurisdictions.
Is my contract data stored or shared?
No. Your contract text is sent securely for AI analysis and immediately deleted after processing. We never store, log, sell, or share your contract data. Your documents are completely private.
How accurate is the AI analysis?
Our AI is highly capable at identifying standard contract clauses and flagging common risk patterns. It cites specific statutes and case law principles. However, AI analysis has limitations — it may miss highly unusual clauses or jurisdiction-specific nuances. Always treat the analysis as a starting point, not a final opinion. For contracts involving significant sums or complex disputes, get a solicitor's view.
How fast is the analysis?
Results start appearing within a few seconds. For longer contracts, our AI analyses the document in sections — you'll see the summary and first clauses almost immediately, with additional clauses loading progressively. This is much faster than any 24-hour turnaround service.
What file types can I upload?
PDF, Word (.docx and .doc), and plain text (.txt) files. You can also paste contract text directly. Note that scanned or image-based PDFs cannot be read — if your PDF was created by scanning a paper document, please copy and paste the text instead.

Contract law questions
Common legal questions
Do I have to sign a contract exactly as presented?
No. Contracts are almost always negotiable. Most people don't negotiate because they don't know what they're looking at — which is exactly what ContractChecker is designed to help with. Identifying the two or three clauses that genuinely concern you and asking for changes is entirely normal, professional behaviour that most employers and clients respect.
Can I be forced to sign a contract?
No. A contract signed under duress may be voidable. However, commercial pressure ("sign this or we'll go elsewhere") is not legally considered duress. You are always free to decline to sign a contract — though there may be commercial consequences. If you genuinely feel you've been coerced into signing something, speak to a solicitor.
What if I signed something I didn't understand?
Generally, you are bound by a contract you have signed, whether or not you understood it. There are limited exceptions — misrepresentation, non est factum (signing something fundamentally different from what you believed you were signing), or where the contract is unconscionable. If you're in this situation, speak to a solicitor promptly. The sooner you act, the more options you have.
How long does a contract last?
It depends on the contract. Fixed-term contracts last until a specified date or event. Periodic contracts (like month-to-month tenancies) continue until notice is given. Some obligations (like confidentiality) can survive the end of the main contract indefinitely. ContractChecker will flag duration and termination provisions in any contract you analyse.
Is a verbal contract legally binding in the UK?
Yes, in most cases. There is no general requirement in English law for contracts to be in writing. However, certain contracts (sale of land, guarantees, consumer credit) must be in writing. Verbal contracts are difficult to enforce because the terms are hard to prove — which is why written contracts, while sometimes annoying, are genuinely useful.
What is the difference between void and voidable contracts?
A void contract is legally invalid from the start — it never existed as a contract. A voidable contract is valid until one party chooses to set it aside. Contracts for illegal purposes are void. Contracts entered into because of misrepresentation or duress are usually voidable — meaning the affected party can choose to rescind (cancel) them, but doesn't have to.
